Overview
The Marine Institute’s Centre for Aquaculture and Seafood Development (C-ASD), offers a complete range of services for seafood processing and aquaculture industries in the areas of applied research, product and process development, technology transfer, advisory services and education and training.
From single person owner/operator start-up companies to large, national corporations C-ASD can play an integral role in:
- technical development;
- improving current practices and procedures;
- adapting technologies from other sources;
- industrial oriented education and training; and
- developing new and innovative ideas from concept to commercialization.
C-ASD provides a suite of technical capabilities expertise for addressing industry needs and participates in research and development efforts for future growth and diversification. Clients can access C-ASD’s modern aquaculture research facility and two food pilot plant facilities. The Marine Institute plant is provincially and federally registered, and has an approved QMP program in place. Clients also benefit from C-ASD’s attention to quality assurance that comes with the Institute’s ISO-9001™ (2000 standards) registration.

- Under the Atlantic Canada Fishery By-products Research Centre, C-ASD helps the fishery capatilize on the potential for product diversitificationa dn value addition, to create commercial by-product utilization.
- Includes: conversion of fish processing discards to high value end products; lab scale research and pilot production; extraction, isolation, purification and concentration of quality products; investigation of functional properties; and routine analysis.

Facilities
- Pilot Plant: C-ASD operates a provincially and federally registered 1350 m2 pilot plant, with an approved QMP program, as well as a non-registered . Clients can develop and process seafood or vegetable based test market samples for export to the world, can use the facilities for developing or testing new equipment and processing technologies, or conduct training workshops for employees and other personnel.
- Aquaculture Facilities: C-ASD hosts a modern aquaculture research facility comprised of seven independent re-circulating systems capable of using fresh or salt water. A live food culture laboratory (zooplankton and algae), quarantine laboratory, feed preparation area, and histopathology laboratory, equipped with an image analysis system, are included within this facility.
